The Method
What is Zentangle®?
Zentangle® is a mindful, easy-to-learn drawing method that combines simple, structured patterns with the pleasure of creating — one stroke at a time.
You don't need to be an artist. You don't need to know what you're doing before you begin.
You simply start with a line, a dot or a curve and see where it takes you.
How it works
You begin with a small square of paper called a tile and a fine black pen. Sue guides you through a series of structured patterns, known as tangles, one stroke at a time.
There’s no need to plan the finished picture, and you don't erase. Instead, you follow each stroke and allow the tile to unfold.
At Tangled Glory, you'll discover that drawing doesn't have to be complicated.

ICSOZOE gives you a playful way to remember some of the simple strokes that can become the building blocks of your tangles:
- — a dot
- — a line
- — a C curve
- — an S shape
- — an orb or circle
- — a zigzag
- — a spiral
- — a loop
Along with a simple line, these basic strokes are all you need to begin exploring.
And somewhere along the way, something lovely happens: your attention settles, the outside noise fades a little, and you become absorbed in the simple rhythm of drawing.
Why Zentangle® feels different
A gentle place for a busy mind
Repeating simple patterns gives your attention somewhere quiet to settle. The rhythm of one stroke followed by another can feel wonderfully absorbing — a little like meditation with a pen.
No artistic experience required
If you can draw a dot, a line, a C curve, an S shape, an orb, a zigzag, a spiral and a loop, you already have the building blocks you need to begin.
There’s no drawing talent to catch up on. Just curiosity, a pen and one stroke at a time.
There are no mistakes
Nothing is erased. If a line doesn't turn out quite as you expected, it simply becomes part of the drawing.
An unexpected mark can become an opportunity to see where the next stroke takes you.
A practice that welcomes everyone
The small tiles and simple tools make Zentangle® approachable for people of different ages, experiences and abilities. You can work at your own pace, in your own way, and create something uniquely yours.

Meet Sue
How it began
I discovered Zentangle® during a difficult stretch of my life. I wasn't looking for a new art form — I was looking for somewhere quiet to put my mind.
A pen, a small square of paper and one repeated pattern turned out to be exactly that.
What surprised me wasn't the drawing. It was how I felt afterwards: steadier, lighter and more like myself.
I kept going, one tile at a time. Eventually, that quiet practice led me to Rhode Island, where I trained as a Certified Zentangle® Teacher so I could share this beautiful method with others.
Why I do it
To slow down.
To find calm.
To quiet the noise.
To create beauty.
To connect with others.
For me, Zentangle® is more than art. It's a mindful journey — a simple way of being present, one stroke at a time.
And teaching is the part I love most.
Watching someone say, “I can't draw,” at the beginning of a session, then quietly create a tile they're genuinely proud of, never gets old.
Because it's not about drawing.
It's about giving yourself permission to slow down, let go of perfection and discover what you're capable of creating.
Alongside teaching, I draw
I’m inspired by the gentle patterns and unexpected beauty that are all around us.
A shell on the sand, the shape of a leaf, a curious turtle, a frog, a dog, or even an interesting shape or pattern that catches my eye can become the beginning of a drawing.
Sometimes my work follows nature. Sometimes it becomes completely abstract.
I never quite know where a line will take me — and that's part of the joy.
For me, drawing is another way of slowing down and really noticing the world around me.
Each piece is created by hand, one stroke at a time, with the hope that it might bring a little beauty, curiosity or calm to whoever sees it.
Some pieces find their way into the Tangled Glory gallery. Others become personalised artwork or meaningful gifts, created especially for someone.
Because you never quite know where one simple line might lead.
